The purpose of the Heart of Ohio Trail is to establish
and maintain a safe recreational and transportation trail through western
Knox County utilizing former railroad beds. The trail will be a public
resource that preserves open spaces, encourages outdoor education and physical
activity, inspires appreciation of local history and geology, and enhances
the living conditions, quality of life, sense of community, and economy
of central Ohio.
~~Heart of Ohio Trail bylaws
The Heart of Ohio Trail includes 16 miles of former railroad bed that
was purchased by the Knox County Commissioners in June 2004. This event
paved the way for a dream to move toward a reality. Securing this piece
was an investment in the future of Knox County.
By linking on the west to a proposed Delaware County trail and on the
east to the Kokosing Gap Trail, the Heart of Ohio Trail will be the central
connector of the 325-mile Cincinnati-to-Cleveland Ohio to Erie Trail.
The Heart of Ohio Trail is owned by the county but is managed by our non-profit
Heart of Ohio Trail, Inc., community organization. Grants and volunteer
efforts support trail acquisition and development. Many county citizens
and businesses assisted with the initial clearing of the trail through Centerburg
and near Bangs.
